Pharyngula: Can this possibly get more insane?

Wow. Apparently that story about the university student who “borrowed” a Eucharist wafer has gone a little bit further. This professor is now being credited with making it dangerous for Catholics to worship in peace. Apparently after the story about the student, this professor – P.Z. Myers – asked for someone to send him a piece of the consecrated Eucharist so that he could abuse and defile it because he saw it as nothing more than a “Frackin Cracker.”

As a former Catholic, I can understand the outrage that poured out at him. On the flip side, if you are not Catholic, then it really is not anything more than a cracker – and a not very tasty one at that.

Are we obligated to respect other religions icons and symbols as if we are members ourselves seems to be the question at hand. As someone who now describes myself as a “recovering Catholic” I want to say no, but then I think about the uproar that occurred when the Taliban destroyed those huge statues of the Buddha, and I am not sure.

Guess I just thought this was an interesting story.
